Our Compassion & Service Team is one of the most engaging teams in the congregation!  Seeking to be an active presence in the community through works of service, it moves to help people in many areas such as those listed below.

Red Cross Blood Drives

Picture
Thank you for continuing to support the Red Cross Blood Drives at First Christian Church.   We are averaging around 20 units collected at each drive.  It seems as if there is always a critical need for blood, so your donations are truly life saving.

The drives are from 2:00 to 6:00pm in our Fellowship Hall. This is located in our Education Building next to our sanctuary with an entrance on Tarboro Street.

Future drives in 2025 are:
Wednesday, May 14 | 2-6PM
Wednesday, July 9 | 2-6PM
Wednesday, September 3 | 2-6PM
Wednesday, November 5 | 2-6PM

FCC Blessing Boxes

Our Compassion and Service team have been working hard and now have 3 Blessing Boxes on the First Christian grounds. They are open for any to take and any to donate.

These include:
1) A green blessing box by the main office that offers faith based books
2) A rainbow blessing box by the playground that offers children & youth items and books
3) A red blessing box by the chapel that offers grab and go edible items, drinks and hygiene aids.

In keeping with our Green Chalice covenant of using resources that are already available, these blessing boxes have been upcycled from unused newspaper bins.

We pray these are a ministry to our neighbors in need.

Green Chalice Congregation

Picture
We are a congregation who strives to be stewards of God's creation and abundance.  In June 2019, First Christian came together to become a Green Chalice Congregation.  Our Green Chalice team meets regularly and is open to anyone to join in!

Hope Station

Picture
Hope Station is the largest food pantry in the community, provides temporary housing for homeless men, and assists people with other emergency needs.  We run a food drive throughout the year and participate in Hope Station’s fundraising efforts with their Swamp Stomp and Halloween Golf Tournament.

In addition, we are a principal sponsor of the annual concert, Music for Hope. This concert is shared by musicians from all around the community and has averaged $4,000 in donations taken during a love offering mid concert.  100% of the donations go directly to Hope Station.

The Turquoise Tables

The Turquoise Tables and their Story
For many, you may have noticed the turquoise tables on our church lawn.  Coming as inspiration from our small group discussions about dreaming and seeing what the church could be, Leslie Kendall was inspired by the book, “The Turquoise Table” by Kristin Shell.

The author is on a mission to love her neighbors. She put a picnic table in her front yard, painted it turquoise, and began inviting neighbors, friends, and even strangers, to hang out and do life together at The Turquoise Table®.  A new concept of hospitality unfolded in her neighborhood, and before long The Turquoise Table® led to a movement of Front Yard People—ordinary people who long to create community right where they live.

Today, there are Turquoise Tables all across America from California to Maine. In all fifty states and in thirteen countries, Turquoise Tables have become a symbol of hospitality, a safe place to sit down and connect over a cup of coffee or glass of sweet tea. So, sit down and invite a friend to share lunch.  All are welcome here!

Children’s Hunger Elimination of Wilson (CHEW)

Picture
Throughout the school year, we pack bags of food for children in local schools to take home and eat each weekend.  During the summer, we adopt a family or two and help supply food to offset the loss of school lunches.

Disciples of Christ Special Offerings

Picture
We take a series of special offerings throughout the year:
Week of Compassion – the relief, refuge, and development fund of the denomination.
Easter – supports our general office denominational ministries.
Pentecost – supports new church development.
Reconciliation – leads the pro-reconciliation/anti-racism work of the Church.
Thanksgiving – provides direct support to Disciples colleges, universities and theological institutions.
Christmas Eve – funds our Pastors Fund which is used to assist members and others who are experiencing financial hardships.
Christmas – supports Regional Ministries including Camp Caroline.

Christmas Lunch for the Community

Picture
The Luncheon we prepare and serve on Christmas Day for individuals and families who might not otherwise have a holiday meal has become a blessed tradition at First Christian.  Each year, we open our Fellowship Hall to about 200 friends and neighbors to share with them in a Christmas feast.  Read more about the Christmas Day Lunch here!
