Sunday Mornings at First Christian

Perhaps you haven't been to church in a while....
or have a church you have grown up in but are
exploring other communities of faith....
....or have never set foot in a church.

No church will follow the same precise style and even 'visiting' can be scary.
We get it.
If it's a first step, then read below on what to expect on a typical Sunday morning at FCC Wilson.

10AM Unified Service

Our worship stems from the Lectionary, and then transcends into spoken responses, prayers and music.

With a vast array of mediums, worship may include the organ, a classic choral anthem, an acoustic contemporary work, guitar, djembe, gospel or anything in between.  We utilize the gifts set before us to help enhance the scripture, as to better understand and ponder these words.  We also use tangible ways to express our prayers such a lighting candles and writing down the things which are on our hearts and releasing them to God.  Children experience worship within the congregation and then participate in a children's moment. Following this time together they are able to go off and journey together in their own Sunday School during the worship hour.

For those unable to worship with us in person, or if you just want to get a feel for things, feel free to join us via our YouTube Channel here.

Following worship in the 11:15AM hour, adults can join in either the Sunday Morning Small Group (discussion style) or Disciples Class (lecture style).  Learn more about these groups!

Where to Go & What to Wear

Activities at FCC take place in both our Sanctuary (worship service) and our Education Building (small groups). The Sanctuary is the large building with the tall steeple immediately off of Vance Street.

The Education Building (where the nursery, Sunday School and Wednesday evening activities are held) is next to the Sanctuary, separated by the Church Bell and an entrance off of Tarboro Street.

We have a large parking lot at the north corner of Tarboro and Vance Streets as well as limited 'on street parking' on both Vance and Tarboro Streets.  Continue scrolling down to learn more about special needs parking and accessibility.

You will see people dressed in a range of clothing.
Our family of believers wears anything from jeans to shorts and sandals to a suit and tie.
You will be welcome in whatever attire makes you feel comfortable.

Children in Worship

If you have little ones, bring them!  This is a great place for them to grow with you on Sunday mornings.  This family of faith is always ready to welcome new friends.
Nursery Care
Our nursery care is in the Education Building with the care of FCC member, Christina Terdik.  On Sunday mornings you may enter at either the front or back entrance.  The nursery is located on the main hallway in the center of the building.

This is intended for children ages 4 and under.  It is prepared with a changing table, cribs, books, toys and music ready to charge their Sunday morning!  Simply bring a bag with their diapers and cup!  The building is secured during the worship hour.

Sunday School
From September-May, your little ones are able to experience what it is like to worship with their parents.  We have activity packets for them in the Narthex (where you enter the sanctuary at the front).  Feel free to ask a deacon who willl greet you for a bag just for them!

Very close to the beginning of worship, we have a children's moment just for them.  Children are invited down for the children's moment and then
may leave with the adults to participate in Sunday School during the worship hour!  They grow in their faith as you grow in yours.  Their Sunday School class is held in the Education Building which is next to the Sanctuary.

This building remains locked and secure during their time together.  After worship, parents may go greet their little ones in the Sunday School room using the back entrance to the Education Building.

During the summer months (June-August) we have activity bags located in the front entrance to keep them engaged during the worship service.

Accessibility for All

Accessibility
We are striving for worship to be accessible to all.   First Christian has a parking lot off of Vance street that is specifically reserved for those with physical limitations.  There is a short stair step entrance off of that parking lot as well as a long ramp which enters into both the Sanctuary and the Education Building.

Inside of our sanctuary, there are pews which have been purposefully shortened so that walkers and wheelchairs may be placed within, and not outside, the worshipping body.  All of God's children deserve an equal place within these walls.

Hearing
We have FM Listening Devices available which aid in hearing worship during the worship hour.  Thanks to these devices, many of our members use these on a weekly basis and have found that they are able to more fully receive the worship experience!  Ask a deacon or other greeter to help you in receiving one to try.  If you wish to speak with a member about their experience using the device, let us know!  We will put you in touch with one of them!

Communion

For members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the celebration of the Lord’s Supper is the central part of our worship, so we share the bread and cup every Sunday. . We cannot imagine one of our Sunday morning worship services omitting the sharing of this meal at Christ’s table. While we celebrate our diversity, it is our unity at the communion table that forms us into community. Because of this, our whole service is shaped around our communing with Christ, from the opening call to worship to the benediction and sending forth.

No one is turned away from this table of acceptance.
All are welcome here and loved just as your are - no exceptions.
All means all!

Joining this Family

We would be delighted to talk to you about becoming a member of First Christian Church!

Do you have to be a member to fully participate in our mission? Absolutely not!
We are one family in the mission of Christ sharing that God is love!
We have countless people in this family who have never 'formally' joined.

However, if you wish to committ in a formal way, y
ou can mention your interest to a greeter or elder on the way out of the worship service or call the church office to set up a time to visit more personally.

We receive people into this family of Christ during any Sunday service by a confession of faith or by a transfer of membership from another congregation.
